Curriculum

I often get asked what we are using for curriculum for the kids. Click on one of the headings on the right to find out what we used for the age or grade level.

  1. Hi there. I was hoping you would be willing to tell me a bit about the Singapore Math curriculum you use. I am working on my thesis and have only so far come to know Singapore the country as an A+ country (for math), but know nothing of the curriculum you are using. Is it at all related to Singaore the country? Is it the curriculum used over there? How did you decide it was the right curriculum to use for your kids?

I’m not sure of the history of Singapore Math. Hopefully, someone from their website could answer those questions. I can however tell you why we decided it was the right program for my oldest. We started with Saxon Math and while I loved it, it was very repetitive. Every day we were doing 100 addition or subtraction facts for review, the lesson and then 26 problems to practice the lesson. Quite a bit for a 5 year old to handle. Math comes very easily to my oldest, so while all the practice is great for some, it was just boring him. Singapore has lessons that are very easy for him to go through. We went through 2 years in 6 months last year and he enjoyed it the whole time. Saxon he just couldn’t get excited about. Tears are always a sign to me to switch curriculum so when crying became a regular part of what eventually was his favorite subject, it was a no brainer to find something else. I also like the Singapore teaches to the CA standards. I hope that helps!

  3. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I agree with you that tears would be a pretty clear signal that a curriculum wasn’t working! The head of my masters progam is headed to Singapore for a few months to check out their curriculum. After posting on here, I checked out Singapore Math’s website and it does seem that it’s based on what goes on in the country. I’ll have to look more into it for my thesis, I’m sure, but thank you for the solid lead! And happy summer!
